Profile

Tom Arend is a PhD candidate at the Research Training Group "The Dynamics of Demography, Democratic Processes and Public Policy" (DYNAMICS), jointly organised by the Hertie School and the Department of Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since September 2019. He also participates in the graduate training offered by the Hertie School.

He obtained his BA from the University of Lancaster, before pursuing his MA at the Sciences Po School of Public Affairs in Paris, where he focused on comparative politics and public policy.

He is interested in questions of accountability and representation in Western Democracies. More concretely, he uses quantitative methods to study how governments in Western Democracies respond to their citizens policy preferences and how growing economic inequalities might impact this process. In this context he studies comparative politics and looks at how citizens and other actors (notably the media) can hold their elected representatives accountable.
