Profile

Sarah Schmauk is a PhD candidate in the Research Training Group "The Dynamics of Demogra-phy, Democratic Processes and Public Policy" (DYNAMICS) at the Hertie School , which is funded by the German Research Foundation. Before joining DYNAMICS, she was a fellow of the European Doctoral School of Demography in Odense, Denmark.

Her main interests are family behavior and intergenerational relationships in context of different welfare states and social inequality. More specifically, she uses quantitative methods to investi-gate the linkage of public policies and their effect on demographic behavior, especially regarding retirement behavior, transfer regimes within families and old age poverty.   

Sarah completed her studies at the University of Stuttgart and the Humboldt University Berlin, focusing on intergenerational solidarity and relationships. She also spent a semester at Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul. 
In the course of her studies, she worked as a student assistant for acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering.

After completing her studies, Sarah worked for almost a year for the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform, an NGO dedicated to promoting democratic processes and thoughtful governance strategies.
