Title

Queer Prestige? Exploring the Role of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity on Institutional Cultural and Economic Capital Accumulation in Germany

Supervisor

Abstract

In Berlin the swearword “Schwuchtel” (“faggot”) is used regularly at school by more than half of the pupils (Klocke, 2012). Meanwhile, in Germany the same-sex marriage was introduced in 2017 and in many (Western) European countries the legal situation for sexual and gender minority people (SGM) has improved somewhat. However, Heterosexism has been rearticulated in more subtle forms such as the belief that too much attention is paid to the issue or the denial that anti-gay discrimination still exists. Whereas research on the economic situation shows disadvantages for SGM in many countries but rather higher educational degrees in Germany, research with the ability to differentiate within SGM showed mixed results for different sub-populations, reflecting the importance of intersectional aspects. It also raises the question of how any selection bias that may occur can be reflected and analyzed and what strategies are needed to cover the entire LGBTQIA+ population in surveys.
This project uses probability-based SOEP data combined with the “LGBielefeld” convenience sample to investigate whether and to what extent differences in social status exist between SGM and straight cisgender people. Therefore, the dissertation will focus on educational degrees, income levels and poverty rates in greatest applicable intersectional comparison. Moreover, with the help of the empirical analyses the project seeks to broaden the conceptualization of cultural reproduction, doing gender and hegemonic masculinity.
