Ertuğ Tombuş hat einen Ph.D. in Politikwissenschaft an der Bilkent Universität, M.Sc. und B.Sc. in Politikwissenschaft der Middle East Technical Universität erworben.
Bevor er zur Humboldt-Universität kam lehrte er an der Columbia Universität, der New School for Liberal Arts, dem Eugene Lang College, der Western Connecticut State University, dem Fashion Institute of Technology, der SUNY und der Izmir University of Economics. Er war Gastwissenschaftler an der Northwestern Universität und der Yale Universität.
Er ist geschäftsführender Herausgeber der Constellations: An International Journal of Critical and Democratic Theory.
Seine primären Forschungs- und Lehrgebiete sind die Politische Theorie, Verfassungstheorie, Vergleichender Konstitutionalismus, Populismus, Säkularismus, Rechtssoziologie, Politische Soziologie, Zeitgenössische Sozialtheorien und die Politik der Türkei.
