Abstract:

The intention is to present motherhood performance as urban practice, for it helps the comprehension on how community is being constructed in highly heterogeneous and urbanized settings. Thus, through the shared histories of motherhood, this dissertation is an attempt to uphold what processes of exclusion/inclusion happen through daily performances, and how these processes contribute to inequality maintenance. Processes of belonging in a stigmatized, highly urbanized and heterogeneous neighborhood may be challenging, and how it happen to mother figures affect families access to resources, as well as to shelter. The performance of motherhood is important for ideas and discourses of belonging, as well as the ways these women encounter and give meaning to certain recognized public stigmas in their daily lives. Belonging is explored as the process with which mothers communicate their stories, and their daily motherhood doings communicate how these processes of belonging, participating, identifying or not happen, as processes in constant change and movement.
