Short profile

Silvia v. Steinsdorff is Professor of Comparative Democracy and the Political Systems of Eastern Europe at the Institute of Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 2009. Together with Prof. Dr. Anna-Bettina Kaiser from the HU Faculty of Law, she is the director of the Integrated Research Institute Law&Society (LSI) at HU since 2018. She currently also serves as Vice Dean of International Affairs at the Faculty of Culture, Education and Social Sciences (KSBF). From 2015 to 2018, she was the speaker the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS), which she has helped to establish since 2009.

Silvia v. Steinsdorff's research covers the comparative analysis of political systems in the grey zone between democracy and autocracy as well as current tendencies of de-democratisation. The regional focus of her work lies on Central and Eastern Europe and Turkey. She is particularly interested in institutions at the intersection of politics and law. In addition to numerous publications on the political regimes of Russia and other successor states of the Soviet Union, she recently completed an extensive interdisciplinary research project on the Turkish Constitutional Court (Steinsdorff et al: "The Constitutional Court of Turkey between Legal and Political Reasoning", Nomos 2022). Her current research focuses on “Judicial Autonomy under Authoritarian Attack”, investigating potential threats to an independent judiciary in 40 Council of Europe member states (funded by Einstein-Stiftung Berlin and Stiftung Mercator).
