Socio-economic Insecurity

(Investigator: Steffen Mau; Researchers: Nadine Schöneck-Voss, Jan Mewes)

In the current public and academic discourse the phenomenon of social insecurity is widely discussed. Various kinds of new social risks and insecurities are becoming more widespread throughout European societies threatening biographical stability and status security. Major objective changes such as an increased competition, the restructuring of the labor market, processes of globalization and internationalization as well as the retrenchment of the welfare state are held responsible for heightened levels of socio-economic insecurity. The project is interested in the relationship between objective changes and subjective perceptions of (in)security. We make use of comparative data sources such as the fourth round of the European Social Survey (ESS; 2008) and different national data sets. Currently, we cooperate with the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (GSOEP) for implementing several new items addressing the issues of insecurity and coping strategies.
