Short Profile

Dr. Burcu Binbuğa received her PhD in political science from Middle East Technical University (METU). She has held research fellowships at the Centre for Southeast European Studies of Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz (2018) and the Department of Social Sciences (ISW) of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2019-20).

Her research interests include social movements, environmental activism, Turkish politics, critical political theory, and authoritarianism. Her current research at HU-Berlin is "Activism in the Face of Authoritarianism: Environmental Movements in Contemporary Turkey". This research examines the environmental movement as a new mode of activism in the face of authoritarianism in contemporary Turkey. As a follow-up to the qualitative field research conducted in Turkey, this study focuses on contemporary environmental movements and considers their potential for creating cracks and ruptures in authoritarian regimes.
