Post-Truth, Social Media, and Politics Today - Panel Discussion on 02/08/2018

02/08/2018 06:00pm

Humboldt University of Berlin, Senate Hall in the Main Building, Unter den Linden 6, 10117 Berlin

Panel Discussion with Jeffrey Champlin, Gülsin Harman, Vincent F. Hendricks und Martin C. Wolff (Chair).

Lies, conspiracies, distrust, and polarization became to define the politics of our times, rather than rational debate, trust, and mutual understanding. For many observers, we are living in the times of Post-Truth.

This panel intends to discuss the phenomenon of post-truth. What is new to it and in which ways are today's political lies different from before? What is the role of social media and new technologies in the possibility of a Post-Truth World? How can we understand social media as the source of both new forms of manipulation and control as well as of resistance and social movement?

The speakers will approach these questions from different angles: the philosophical, political, and economic dimension of truth and information processing will be analyzed with regard to their relation to democracy. Insights from the journalistic field complement those reflections with a focus on the situation in Turkey.

The panel will be conducted in English. There will be a reception afterwards.
