Research Environment and Networks

The BGSS maintains strong national and international networks. Besides various university collaborations, the BGSS mainly consists of non-university research institutions such as the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB). At the same time, the research profile of the faculty of the Department of Social Sciences (ISW) of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. We have been successful in establishing a research environment that makes it possible to integrate doctoral researchers in research projects at partner institutions as well as into Junior Research Groups and the like. Many BGSS doctoral researchers and post doctoral alumni are closely involved in research activities at non-university partner institutions. Several members of our faculty from these institutions hold special professorships at the Department of Social Sciences.

The BGSS maintains strong bilateral partnerships with these institutions, including the option of research internships, joint junior research groups and post-doc opportunities. Some researchers of these partner institutions are members of the BGSS Faculty. Doctoral members of the research staff can become associates at BGSS.

 

International Networks

Multilateral Networks

Since 2009 the BGSS has been the coordinating institution of the European PhD in Socio-economic and Statistical Studies (SESS.EuroPhD) with a consortium of six universities (Haifa, ELTE Budapest, Barcelona, La Sapienza Rome, Tampere, Southampton). Doctoral Researchers starting at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin are automatically members of Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences.

In 2010 the BGSS was admitted as an official member of the European Graduate Network, a network of seven top graduate schools in Europe (EUI, University of Barcelona Pompeu Fabra, Institut d’Études Politiques (Sciences Po) Paris, London School of Economics, and Central European University Budapest, SUM). The aim of the Graduate Network is to bring together graduate students of sociology and political science from leading universities in Europe. The network encourages and facilitates collaborative research of the PhD students of the participating universities, emphasizing multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches to political and social sciences. In spring 2012, the BGSS has hosted the 4th Graduate Network Conference. asizing multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches to political and social sciences. In spring 2012, the BGSS has hosted the 4th Graduate Network Conference. In March 2018, the BGSS hosted the 10th Graduate Network Conference.

Within these multilateral networks BGSS takes many different roles. For example, it acts as the coordinating institution of the European PhD Program in Socio-economic and Statistical Studies.

 

Bilateral Networks

International networking has a long tradition at Humboldt and the BGSS, for example the Humboldt-Duke University Exchange Program which allows two ISW/BGSS master or doctoral researchers to enroll at Duke`s doctoral program in Political Science for one year and for Duke students and doctoral researchers vice versa.
