Abstract

“My monography is built on three main chapters: In chapter 2, I compare the prevailing liberal-democratic attitudes in Muslim immigrants’ countries of origin with those of the destination country under investigation, namely Germany, but also with other "Western", Christian countries more generally (in addition to Christian-Orthodox and Buddhist countries). Here, I also examine the relationship between religious fundamentalism and liberal-democratic attitudes. I mainly analyze the publicly available 7th wave of the World Values Survey (WVS) and complement this analysis with further secondary data, namely the second wave of the Senegambia survey, which was collected within the TRANSMIT project by colleagues who also work in the research unit Migration, Integration, Transnationalization (MIT) at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. The Senegambia survey allows me to cross-validate the findings from the WVS because it includes a more comprehensive battery of items that capture religious fundamentalism. In the two other main chapters, chapter 3 and chapter 4, I investigate two mechanisms related to the processes of migration and integration that can reduce the gap in liberal-democratic attitudes between Muslim immigrants and the German host population: Value acculturation and cultural self-selection. In chapter 3, I analyze the Religious Fundamentalism and Radicalization (RFR) survey, which was also collected by MIT colleagues, to investigate the acculturation mechanism. In chapter 4, I analyze a survey experiment that was included in the first wave of the Senegambia survey to examine cultural self-selection. The remaining two chapters refer to the introduction (chapter 1) and the conclusion of the monography (chapter 5).”
