Dissertation Title

Youths Trapped in Prejudice

According to international comparison the level of xenophobia and homophobia among the Hungarian adults is one of the highest in Europe. Furthermore social surveys show that the vast majority of the Hungarian adults reject the members of the largest ethnic minority group, the Roma. However the scientific literature is rather consistent concerning the fact that it is first around the age of adolescence when prejudiced or tolerant attitudes of the individual crystallise, there is very little information on the attitudes of the Hungarian adolescents. The objective of my research is to understand the development of the prejudiced attitudes of the Hungarian adolescents from a dynamic aspect viewing them not merely as empty containers filled up by the different institutions of socialisation, but as active participants in their own social development.

In order to answer my research questions I carried out qualitative and quantitative research with Hungarian teenagers. In my dissertation I reconstruct certain mechanisms relevant for the crystallisation of the intergroup attitudes. In order to capture the complexity of prejudice development the adolescents are placed in their micro-environment among their peers, and also the effects of the attitude climate of the school class are taken into consideration when explaining the generally high level of anti-Roma prejudice among Hungarian teenagers.
