Dissertation Title (preliminary)

Determinants of Interviewer Effects in Face-to-Face Surveys

The majority of surveys in the social sciences are still carried out by interviewers. Survey research revealed that respondent answers can significantly be influenced by interviewers during the interview. As a consequence, interviewers possess a meaningful impact on survey data quality. The influence of interviewers on responses and respondent behavior is generally referred to as “interviewer effects”. Those interviewer effects have been shown to be present in any type of survey questions and topics and generally threaten the validity of survey measures. Even though interviewer effects have increasingly been investigated over the last decades, little is known about the underlying mechanisms and conditions under which interviewer effects are most likely to occur.

The doctoral thesis aims to shed light on the determinants of interviewer effects in face-to-face surveys. In contrast to other studies, the proposed research will be focused on detailed interviewer characteristics and thus expand the current generation of interviewer effect models. Applying theories and findings from (social-)psychology, the dissertation intends to contribute to a deeper understanding of the conditions under which interviewer effects are most likely and use this information to build a more elaborate model for the interviewer-respondent interaction.
