Regular BGSS Doctoral Researcher

The BGSS seeks international applicants interested in completing a doctoral degree at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Outstanding academic records, first research experience and a strong dedication to becoming a researcher in the Social Sciences are expected.

Regular members are approved graduate students who have successfully completed the international BGSS application process. During the three year doctoral program regular members fulfill all milestones of the structured training program, leading them to their doctoral degree. Members of the BGSS, who are not funded by other institutions, will be awarded scholarships of 1200€/month for up to three years, contingent on the successful completion of each year. However BGSS welcomes third party funded applicants.

In addition to the scholarship, research stays abroad, participation in conferences or workshops as well as guest lectures are supported.

 

 

Minimum Requirements

  • M.A. degree or equivalent (Magister, Diplom) in Social Sciences (Sociology, Political Science, International Studies)
  • English language proficiency at C1-level or equivalent (see detailed information)

 

 

Application period is closed for 2012

  • From January 2 to February 15, midnight (CET)
  • End of March: Invitations to Interviews
  • April, 18-20: Interviews in Berlin
  • Beginning of May: Information about results

 

 

Application Documents

The application is to be submitted via our online application platform. The following documents are compulsory and need to be uploaded (PDF or JPEG file format only):

  • Statement of purpose (500 words maximum)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Certificate of English Language Ability (TOEFL, IELTS, C-level etc.)
  • Exposé of your doctoral project (5-10 pages)
  • Copies of degrees and certificates (official transcripts, diplomas, including translations into German or English, if necessary)
  • Two letters of recommendation sent directly to the BGSS

Associate and Guest Membership

Guest Membership

The BGSS regularly hosts guest researchers of international graduate schools for the duration of 3 to 12 months, who are interested in the BGSS Research Areas. Applicants must be enrolled as PhD students at a non-German university There are no scholarships available.

Your application should clarify when and why you want to study especially at BGSS and how your research topic fits into the BGSS research areas.

Associated Membership

Doctoral members of the research staff at BGSS non-university partner institutions or the Department of Social Sciences can apply for an associated membership. Once accepted, they are free to take part in the doctoral training program and gain teaching experience at the Department of Social Sciences. In addition, research stays abroad, participation in conferences or workshops as well as guest lectures are supported.
